Have a loved one who struggles with hearing loss? Below are some tips to make their holiday more enjoyable…

Be mindful of noise: Turn down or turn off background music, especially during meals. Consider keeping the TV in another room or on mute with captions on.
Set up for success: Seat guests with hearing loss in the best possible spot, such as the middle of the table. Consider round tables to make it easier for everyone to see faces.
Ensure good lighting: Make sure the lighting is bright enough so people can see mouths and facial expressions for visual cues.
Get attention before speaking: Make eye contact with the person before you start talking to ensure they are ready to listen.
Speak clearly: Speak at a normal pace and tone, without shouting.
Rephrase instead of repeating: If someone can’t hear you, try rephrasing the sentence. They may have missed a specific consonant or vowel, and repeating the same words may not help.
Help include them: Gently include those with hearing loss in conversations. You can encourage others to do the same and help bring them back into the fold.
Create quiet zones: Designate a separate, quieter area for conversation or set the kids’ table in a different room to help reduce noise at the main table.
